Selfrighteousness is one of the major reasons why many believers fail before the Almighty God. Many believers’ prayers are rejected because of pride and Selfrighteousness. This is because God resist the proud and gives Grace to the humble. In Luke 18:14, the Jesus says that the publican man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalts himself shall be abased; and he that humbles himself shall be exalted.
These were two men that went to the house of God to pray, one was a publican and the other was a pharisee. The publican was grieved in his soul because of his sins and wickedness, he was broken and could not even lift up his face from the ground and was asking God for mercy and redemption. While the other one in his pride and arrogance was recounting his spiritual achievements and prowess.
Instead of asking God to justify him, he boasted of his works of righteousness inasmuch as it is only God who gives power to become righteous (because the righteousness of a man is like filthy rags before God). He was not justified while the sinner who repented was forgiven and justified. Pride withdraws God’s grace and mercy, it exposes one to the elements of the this world and leaves one at the whim of the devil without reprisal or comfort from God.
Also in James 4: 6-8, the Bible made it clear that it is God who gives us more grace to live a righteous life and He only gives it to us when we humble ourselves before Him, but will resist us if we are proud of heart. If we Submit ourselves therefore to God, then we will receive the grace from God to resist the devil and he will flee from us. God is a covenant God, we have to meet Him halfway: if we draw near to Him, He will surely draw near to us and we can do this by cleansing our hands from all sins; and by purifying our hearts with the Word of God which will save us from double mindedness and lack of of faith.
In Obadiah 1: 3-4, the Bible shows us the nature and the heart of the proud and what God will do to them that are of a proud heart. God made it clear in His Word that by strength shall no man prevail, so that man will not be proud or boast. God ordains strength from the weak things of this life, He uses the foolish things of this life to confound the wise. He orchestrated it according to His divine plan so that the race is not to the swift neither the battle to the strong, but all comes from the mercies of God. If the LORD does not watch the city, the watchmen watch in vain as well as those who build outside God’s plan.
The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee, thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground? Though thou exalt thyself as the eagle, and though thou set thy nest among the stars, thence will I bring thee down, saith the LORD.Obadiah 1:3 -4
Romans 12 :16 admonishes us to live in harmony with one another, and never to be proud or conceited/vain, but always willing to associate with people of low position. Therefore, let all that you do be done in humility with the Love of God, not for pride, recognition or for vain glory. Humbly seek the face of God in repentance prayer and He will give you His Peace and Rest. God bless you!
